The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) took an important step forward in its sustainability journey with the opening ceremony of the Yard for Environmental Sustainability (YES) Pavilion recently. Officiating at the ceremony were Professor Sham Mai-har, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Professor Nick Rawlins, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Dr Lam Ching-choi, Chairman of the Council for Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development; and Mr. Wong Kam-sing, Former Secretary for the Environment and a member of CUHK’s Committee on Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development.

The Yard of Environmental Sustainability (YES) Pavilion at CUHK is a permanent brick structure uniting education, sustainability, architecture, mechanical automation engineering, and robotic construction. Conceived by CUHK’s Centre for Robotics in Construction and Architecture (CRCA) , it uses CU-Brick’s parallel cable-driven robot for precise bricklaying. Curving walls define shaded gathering areas, organize recyclables, and host a book exchange, showcasing circular-economy practices. Internationally recognised, CU-Brick scales automation in architecture and in partnership with industry, it has advanced out of the laboratory and into practical, real-world, permanent construction. Future prototypes will integrate technical advancements, expanded BIM adoption, and increased use of recycled construction materials.
