Exercise Year 2025 / 26
Department School of Architecture
Institution The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Congratulations to Prof. Edward Ng, Prof. Cecilia Chu, Prof. Hiroyuki Shinohara, and Prof. Wang Shuaizhong – a multidisciplinary research cohort from our school – on their successful awards of the General Research Fund (GRF) for 2025-26.
Continuing his pioneering work in urban climate studies, Prof. Edward Ng is awarded for his project titled “Optimizing Microclimate Data Representativeness Assessment: From Theoretical Refinement to Urban Microclimate Study Practice.” His research introduces a new “representativeness” framework to strengthen the scientific basis, practical applications, and technical capabilities within the microclimate study community.
Prof. Cecilia Chu is honoured for her project “Re-Historicizing the ‘Golden Age of Construction’: Narrating Hong Kong Histories and Urbanism Through Infrastructure”. This research illustrates how infrastructure transformed Hong Kong’s physical territory and produced urban knowledge in the postwar period. It prompts critical reflection on the evolving modes of governance and the reshaping of the public realm in the past and present.
Awarded for his innovative work in traditional material techniques, Prof. Hiroyuki Shinohara will lead the project “Passing on Craft Knowledge: A New Method for Bamboo Heat Bending Applications Beyond Traditional Craft.” His research bridges the craft of bamboo and contemporary architectural practice by optimising the performance conditions for heat bending.
Prof. Wang Shuaizhong is the recipient of the Early Career Scheme (ECS) for his project “Building from Construction Waste: Developing a Framework for Circular Reuse of Concrete Structural Components in Hong Kong.” His study proposes a sustainable and upcycling approach to reusing concrete in the local construction industry.
These recognitions reflect the School’s robust research culture and commitment to advancing new knowledge of the built environment. They further highlight the growing strength of the School’s key research clusters in design practice, history and theory, and sustainable environmental technology. We extend our congratulations to our awarded faculty members and wish them continued success in their scholarly pursuits.
