Modernist Heritage
The post-WWII period witnessed a surge of modernist public buildings and infrastructures across various geopolitical contexts outside the “West.” The era also marked a growing interest in the concept of the “region,” as architects and designers began to explore the development of local, regional and national identities that diverged from the prevailing International Style.
This seminar features two talks that will examine some lesser-known building projects and emergent approaches to Modernism in Hong Kong from the 1950s to 1980s. How might revisiting these works enrich our understanding of Hong Kong as a unique site of enquiry in the international history of the Modern Movement? How can these projects be re-evaluated as part of the city’s modern architectural heritage?
