Digital Media
This course introduces fundamental digital tools and workflows essential for contemporary architectural practice. Students develop technical literacy across measurement, modelling, fabrication, and representation through hands-on engagement with industry-standard software. Through the themes of digitization, design, and synthesis, students will develop a deeper understanding of how technolgoy informs architectural thinking and production. Throughout, students engage with a variety of digital and physical media designed to complement their design studio work.
ARCH2222 Digital Media introduces architecture students to essential digital tools and workflows that bridge measurement, modelling, fabrication, and representation. The course assumes no prior knowledge of digital drawing tools and provides structured, hands-on instruction in industry-standard software.
The course is organized into four integrated phases that build technical literacy progressively. DIGITIZE establishes precision drafting fundamentals, teaching students to translate physical measurements into accurate digital geometry using CAD environments, coordinate systems, curve construction, and layer organization. Students learn contemporary data capture methods including LiDAR, photogrammetry, and point cloud processing. DESIGN develops 3D modelling competency through surface-based operations, emphasizing clean topology and fabrication-ready geometry. COMPOSE introduces visual communication through image manipulation and time-based media, teaching layering systems, compositional hierarchy, video sequencing, and rendering workflows. COMPUTE explores data-driven design methods through visual programming and AI-assisted workflows, introducing students to computational logic, analysis tools, and generative design techniques.
Assignments emphasize precision, organization, and integration across multiple media types. The course runs parallel to the Measure design studio, with specific sessions supporting studio deliverables while maintaining independent learning objectives.
