Building Systems Integration
Architecture’s power lies not just in form, but in the integrated orchestration of its building systems. This course bridges the gap between conceptual design and technical resolution, asserting that site, structure, envelope, services, and interiors are not constraints but generative opportunities. By reframing building technology as a design driver, students learn to articulate rigorous, performative architecture. Special emphasis is placed on leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as diagnostic and generative tools within the architect’s workflow, preparing students for the data-driven demands of contemporary practice in high-density urban contexts.
Building upon foundational knowledge from material & construction (ARCH 2413), structures (ARCH 2422), and environmental technology (ARCH 3424), this course actively integrates these discrete disciplines into a cohesive design methodology. The curriculum responds directly to a critical pedagogical gap: students often understand systems theoretically but struggle to apply them spatially during design. The course tackles this by sequencing learning from observation to synthesis.
Initially, students adopt Leonard Bachman’s framework – site context, structure, envelope, services, and interiors – to dissect case studies (Assignment 1), sharpening their ability to ‘see’ systems in built work. Subsequently, a hands-on Parti Autopsy exercise uses a fictional project to scaffold BIM and AI skills without the complexity of an existing building. Here, students learn to expose missing information, run clash detections, and simulate performance. These skills then converge on a real campus building (Assignment 2: Anatomical Studies / Digital Twin), which students model, diagnose, and finally critique and redesign individually (Assignment 3).
This pedagogical arc – Observe, Scaffold, Apply, Synthesise – aims to produce architects who can converse with engineers, anticipate system conflicts early, and leverage digital tools to test design ideas. Ultimately, this course ensures that technology becomes an intuitive extension of design thinking rather than an intimidating post-rationalisation, aligning with the programme’s goal of producing technically competent, critically aware graduates ready for professional practice.
