Everest Residences in Chai Wan, a transitional social housing project designed by Prof. Nelson Chen for the Society of Community (SoCO), received the HKIA Merit Award for Public Housing from the Hong Kong Institute Architects. Despite severe restrictions for unit size (typically only 16 sq.m., equivalent to a carpark space) and modular construction (MiC), nevertheless, equitable, sustainable and habitable housing was achieved not just for temporary shelter but also human dignity through design quality and spaces for community engagement.
