In recent years, a growing number of architects have turned to relearning traditional craftmaking and integrating this knowledge into their design practices to create more sustainable environments. By focusing on the craftmaking process, utilising local resources, and engaging with communities, these efforts not only enhance the living conditions of local places; more importantly, they empower ordinary people to take active roles in the building process and shape their own futures.
Yasmeen Lari's transformative work in Pakistan exemplifies how crafts can generate beautiful environments that are sensitive to local contexts, foster new knowledge and imaginaries, and empower individuals through collective participation. In this forum, students and faculty from CUHK’s School of Architecture will engage in discussion with Lari to explore the emerging role of crafts in contemporary architectural practice and their potential to promote more environmentally and socially sustainable futures in the 21st century.
