Introduction

Shuaizhong Wang is an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and the Founding Director of the [S]Equilibrium Lab . With a dual background in architectural and structural design, he works at the intersection of architecture and structural engineering, approaching structural design as a medium that integrates structural perception, digital design processes, and circular construction strategies.

Wang received his doctorate from ETH Zürich (Chair of Structural Design) and has studied and worked in Mainland China, Finland, Japan, and Switzerland. His research advances design methods and pedagogical frameworks that link architectural and structural thinking, from conceptual reasoning to material and construction logics. Drawing on graphic statics, form‑finding, and performance‑based design, his work integrates design experimentation and material investigation, supporting structural intuition and learning in both practice and education.

Wang’s work has been published in international journals and conferences, and his research‑driven projects have been presented internationally, including the Concrete Spolia Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Biennale China’s National Pavilion. He holds leadership roles in key professional organizations in structures and architecture, including the Executive Council of the International Association of Structures and Architecture (IASA). His teaching and research have received recognition, including awards for educational innovation.

Wang welcomes PhD inquiries from applicants interested in structural design in architecture.
