This course offers an introduction to urban processes, including urban ideals, typology and city forms, spatial data, urban regeneration, placemaking, and the role of community engagement. It incorporates a digital realm that explores the use of technology and digital tools in unveiling urban design processes, such as GIS, data mapping, and case studies of urban simulation. Through lectures, field work assignments and community role-play exercises, students gain hands-on experience and engage directly with stakeholders and community members.


Additionally, the course features sharing sessions with domain experts from the local community and industry. These sessions provide opportunities for students to learn from professionals who have CUHK SOA URBD5731 Urban Processes MSc in Urban Design 2024/25 2 practical experience in urban planning and design. Experts share their knowledge, present case studies, and engage in discussions, enriching students' understanding of real-world practices and fostering networking opportunities.


By combining theoretical concepts, practical fieldwork, digital tools, community engagement, and insights from industry professionals, the course offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to understanding urban processes. It equips students with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives necessary to navigate the complexities of urban development in Hong Kong and beyond.
