Introduction

Inge Goudsmit is an architect and Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where she teaches and conducts research in architecture, urban design, and the social production of the built environment. With over 20 years of experience in practice, she previously served as an Associate at the Pritzker Prize-winning architectural firm the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), contributing to major international projects across Asia and Europe.

Goudsmit’s research investigates the social processes through which architecture is conceived, produced, and appropriated, with a particular focus on iconic cultural buildings in East Asian cities. Her work explores how spatial representations, design practices, and everyday use contribute to the shaping of urban environments. Driven by a deep interest in the lived experience of architecture, she bridges academic inquiry and professional practice to promote more inclusive, reflective, and socially grounded approaches to architecture and urban design.

Her work is published in international peer-reviewed journals in urban studies and architecture, including Urban Studies, Journal of Urban Management, and Archnet-IJAR. She has contributed to book chapters, conference proceedings, and professional commentaries, and is a regular speaker at academic and professional events. She is a registered architect in the Netherlands and a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (HKIUD).
