In this international collaborative design studio with Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), Italy, our MArch students explored the possibilities of alternative urbanism and generating public space out of infrastructure design. Led by Prof. Doreen Liu, the joint studio began in February 2017, when a group of postgraduate students from POLITO visited CUHK for an intensive one-week design workshop, followed by a related symposium in Shenzhen. Together, the participating students from both universities examined the intertwining relationship between infrastructure, environmental risk and civic design in Qianhai, an experimental zone in the Pearl River Delta.
After months of individual studio work, our students travelled to POLITO to present their final research-design projects in June 2017. Apart from academic reviews and seminars, they also visited modern and contemporary architectural landmarks in Milan, Como and Turin, including Fondazione Prada by OMA, Casa del Fascio by Giuseppe Terragni, and Teatro Regio Torino redesigned by Carlo Mollino.
