Edward is a Professor of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong; and an environmental consultant offering expert services to organizations and governments.

EDUCATION: Edward graduated in Architecture from Nottingham University with a 1st class Honours degree and from Manchester University with a BArch (Distinction in Design and in Dissertation).  He was elected a Commonwealth Scholar (1987-90), ACU for his PhD study at Cambridge University; and he was a resident scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge.  Lately, he has also taken further studies and obtained a MBA with Distinction from Warwick University.

ACADEMIC: In 1999, Edward joined CUHK.  In 2002, he was made a full professor.  In 2011, for his international design and academic reputation, he was promoted to the top professorial band/rank of CUHK.  At CUHK, Edward teaches Design and lectures on Environmental Studies.  He is the Programme Director of MSc in Environment and Sustainable Design.  He has received invitations to lecture at, among others, Cambridge, Harvard GSD, UCLA, Kassel U, Tokyo U, NUS and Auckland U.  In 1994, he spent a year as a Visiting Scholar at MIT.  He is an International Advisory Board member of LRT and an editorial board member of ASR; he is also a member of a number of local professional (e.g. HKIA, PGBC) and international (e.g. CIE, PLEA) committees; and he is visiting professor at, among others, Xian Jiaotong University, China. 

PROFESSIONAL: Edward was elected a Royal Manchester Institute Heywood Medalist for his achievements in architectural design in 1986.  He is a qualified architect [RIBA, HKIA, ARB - Hong Kong and UK].  His work on daylight (IDMP) studies has earned him membership with two of the world’s most important illumination engineering societies [IESNA, MSLL].  He is member or fellow of a number of meteorological societies [ISB, AMS, FHKMetS, FRMetS] for his work on urban climate for city planning.  He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) for his contribution to sustainable design.  Professionally, Edward founded NG Design and had practiced as an architect and consultant in London and in Cambridge, UK prior to his return to HK.  Recently, he has focused on offering design advices strategically to policy makers, governments, organizations and professionals.

DESIGN: Edward's design works have been exhibited at various locations in the UK, France, USA, Italy, Germany, China, Spain, Denmark, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and so on.  His A Bridge Too Farproject has won him many awards including the prestigious RIBA International Awards 2006.  Since then, Edward has established and is the founding Chairman of Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge To China) Charitable Foundation.  Another of his ongoing design interest is “low-tech sustainable design” in China.  His “Eco-School” has been highly commended in the inaugural World Architecture Festival 2008 in Barcelona, Spain; it has won three Design for Asia (DFA) 2008 Awards, the CAMA 2008 Grand Award, the RIBA International Awards 2009 and the UNESCO 2009 Heritage Awards.   His post-quake designs have also been internationally applauded, winning among others the UNESCO 2011 Heritage Awards, and Grand Award of the Green Building Awards 2010.

RESEARCH: Edward's research interests are in the areas of daylight design, urban climatology and sustainable architecture. He has published over 250 papers, book chapters and reports; and he has secured over US$9 million of research grants over the years.  Recently, his research interest is on high density city design issues.  He has collaborated with many scholars in Hong Kong, the UK, Germany, Japan and Singapore, and with Hong Kong government offices like ED, BD, EPD and PlanD.  His “Air Ventilation Assessment” (AVA) Project with Planning Department HKSAR has won the 2005 HKIA Research Awards; the 2006 PGBC Grand Awards; and Runner-up of the RIBA Research Awards 2007.

COMMUNITY: Edward is the founding Chairman of Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation.  He has chaired the foundation leading students from over 18 universities to China for humanitarian projects.  He is the recipient of Red Cross’s Hong Kong Humanity Award in 2010, and He is honorable mention of Reader's Digest’s Asian of the Year 2011.   

Bio: Prof Edward Ng is an Architect and a Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).  He has practised as an architect as well as lectured in various universities around the world.  His specialty is in Environmental and Sustainable Design.  He is Director of the M.Sc. Sustainable and Environmental Design Programme at CUHK.  As an environmental consultant to the Hong Kong SAR Government, he developed the performance based daylight design building regulations and the Air Ventilation Assessment (AVA) Guidelines.  He is drafting the Urban Climatic Map for Planning in Hong Kong.  Edward is a daylight and solar energy expert advisor to the Chinese Government.  As a visiting professor of Xian Jiaotong University, China, he is designing ecological schools, and building sustainable projects in China.  He has twice been the recipient of the International Awards of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Bio in Simplified Chinese:  吴恩融先生现为香港中文大学建筑系教授,香港无止桥慈善基金会主席。自英国剑桥大学获得博士学位后,他曾在多所知名大学任教。生态可持续建筑是吴教授多年来重点关注的研究领域,目前具体涉及的研究包括生态可持续建筑设计方法、建筑自然采光和太阳能利用、都市气候与生态可持续的城市规划等。与此同时,吴教授联合相关领域的国际专家,开创并亲自主持香港中文大学建筑学系可持续环境设计理学硕士课程。受香港特区政府委托,吴教授作为环境顾问,制定了香港建筑天然采光能效的建筑规范和空气流通评估准则及其技术性方法,还被中国政府聘为天然采光和建筑能效专家顾问。吴恩融教授在2005717日结合中港两地专业人士和多所大学生的力量,在甘肃省毛寺村顺利建成首座无止桥,寓意爱无止境。之后,他在内地贫困农村建了多座无止桥,并与国家住房与城乡建设部合作于20074月正式成立无止桥慈善基金会。現時為該基金會的主席。四川地震他領導基金在四川省凉山州啓動了灾後重建的綜合示範項目。吴教授的设计作品曾兩度获得英国皇家建筑师学会国际大奖及其它国际著名奖项
