Project in Yunnan

Site Background - Width of river at site is 13m,the necessary channel for villagers to pass to gain access to the outside world. Normally, villagers construct a simple bamboo bridge to cross, which is destroyed by the river each year. During the dry season with little water, villagers can wad across the river.  When it comes to the rainy season, the river floods, so there are frequent tragedies and deaths resulting from pedestrians drowning.

The Need - Apart from approximately 2000 villagers needing to wad across the river for access to the county and beyond, approximately 300 students have to cross the river to go to school.

Villagers Benefited - 2000 nos (about 300 students)

Project Team - Teacher and student team from Kunming University of Science and Technology (KMUST) and Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)

Dec 2009

Project team conducted the 1st investigation trip in Dec.

 

Sep 2010

Project team conducted the 2nd investigation trip in Sep. They found that an original stone arch bridge which was used by about 2,000 local people as main access, collapsed in Aug.

Oct 2010

Wu Zhi Qiao team members from Chongqing University (CQU) and Chongqing Jiaotong University (CJU) had a meeting with the project team to share their bridge building experience in early Oct.

Afterward, the project team conducted the 3rd investigation trip with two members from CJU to further investigate the bridge foundation work and confirm the bridge design.
   

 

Nov 2010

In late Nov, project team conducted 4th investigation trip to collect logistic information for pre-construction preparation. Click here for the investigation report (Chinese version only).

The project team will supervise the local contractor to build the piers and prefabricate the parts in Dec.

   

 

Jan 2011

More than 35 professional and student volunteers mainly from 4 universities in Hong Kong, Mainland and Taiwan built a 20 meters long footbridge succcesfully in Aidong Village, Luchun County, Honghe State, Yunnan  during the period from  25 Dec  to  3 Jan.
