Our Objectives

The Foundation is a registered charitable organisation in Hong Kong. By mobilising university students, professionals and volunteers to actualize sustainable bridge projects, we aim to:

  1. Integrate Hong Kong into the Mainland China by encouraging young generations to help the needy in the motherland, and building a spiritual bridge with love, appreciation and mutual understanding through an inter-university initiative;


  2. Improve livelihood of the poor from remote rural areas with urgent bridge-building needs;


  3. Inspire appreciation, respect and preservation of local culture and ecological environment, promote and enhance sustainability.

Our Work

To expand the "Wu Zhi Qiao" project into an inter-university initiative in the Mainland and Hong Kong, the Foundation will facilitate the universities to accomplish different bridge building projects by providing funding and technical support. To achieve all these, the Foundation has established four standing committees:

  • Advocacy and Publicity Committee
  • Fundraising Committee
  • Finance Committee

    Our Support

    The establishment of the Foundation was accredited as a 10th Anniversary Celebration Programme of the Return of Sovereignty to China with the endorsement by the HKSAR Government and the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR.

    The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, P.R.C., will provide full support on project implementation in the Mainland, guidance on legal compliance and the selection of project sites. They will help establish a database with information on appropriate poverty-stricken and remote rural areas with urgent bridge-building needs.

    All bridge building projects will be vetted and closely monitored in accordance with the framework illustrated in the chart below:

    Design Principles

    We hope that the bridge projects can promote the appreciation and respect of local tradition, educate local villagers as to the importance of environmental protection, and foster a harmonious relationship among people, architecture and the environment. Accordingly, all bridge designs should adhere to 4 main principles:

    1. Safe, Efficient and Handmade
      • Consider pre-fabrication to reduce onsite procedures.
      • Construct safely by hand along the riverbank.

    2. Contextual and Sustainable
      • Make use of local and sustainable resources.
      • Build with locals, deliver skills and techniques for construction and maintenance, and educate locals the importance of environmental protection and sustainability.

    3. Environmentally Sound
      • Minimise logging by the use of huge wooden logs, lengthen their longevity through technology.
      • Assess and mitigate negative environmental impacts to local environment and ecology.

    4. Blending Tradition and Modernity
      • Explore and utilise local traditional construction methods, combine with modern building technology to achieve synergy.
