The Unit focuses on the research of all aspects of Chinese architecture and built heritage. The main tasks undertaken by the unit are:

  • documentation and analysis of vernacular villages and urban centers;
  • development of a web-based electronic archive, and a tangible (more traditional) archive of photographs, plans, and other documentation associated with Chinese villages and cities for the use of the general public and researchers;
  • exploration of new methodologies in the study of vernacular environments and buildings; serving as a consultant for development, conservation studies of vernacular environments and buildings;
  • training future researchers in development,conservation and architectural studies;
  • becoming a resource center for undergraduate and graduate study of Chinese vernacular architecture
