Tectonics

The work of the Tectonics Studio is based upon a concept of scholarship in which teaching and research are inseparable. The studio considers design studio teaching as a special form of educational experimentation. In general, the Tectonics Studio places its emphasis on the making of buildings, on the principles and methods underlying the organization of space, and on the formal expression based on materiality. These tectonic aspects are confronted with other aspects of architecture. T he teaching organization varies in three formats according to the level of study . The BSSc program (Year 2 and 3) emphasizes fundamental concepts, methods, and skills relating to a tectonic approach to architecture. It is conducted as program centered and research based team teaching in a highly structured manner. The MArch 1 program is conducted according to focused topics such as structure and space relationship, or parametric design method. The thesis study is organized based on a set of issues relating to the interest of the studio such as transformable design, modular design, parametric design, the role of material and construction, etc. Work in the studio is supported by lectures, tutorials, and workshops. In addition to research conducted through teaching, there are several studio research projects, which are supported by university and department grants. They result from a collective effort of all studio members. Studio members also conduct research based on individual interests, but sharing a recognizable common direction in tectonic studies.
