Lecture by Maggie Ma and Sarah Mui
Maggie Ma (MArch 2007) and Sarah Mui (BSSc 2006) founded DOMAT and One Bite Design Studio, respectively, carving out unique positions beyond the conventions of architectural commissioning. In this lecture, they will introduce their research-based community projects that are counter-intuitive to the profit-driven culture of the city, while sharing the passion behind setting up practices that are firmly rooted in the community, as well as being invested in design innovation.
Maggie Ma is an architect with a focus on socially sustainable design. She is interested in establishing relationships between architectural form and its community implications. In 2013, Maggie and Mark Kingsley set up DOMAT, a non-profit practice through which she has realised educational facilities in rural China and worked with underprivileged communities in Hong Kong. DOMAT was a finalist for the Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award in 2018.
Sarah Mui is committed to connecting people through design and placemaking. Upon completing her graduate diploma at UCL, Sarah co-founded One Bite Design Studio with Alan Cheung (MArch 2007) in 2014, where she has developed community projects with a sensitivity to local culture, and a vision to blend design and life with social consciousness. Sarah received the Hong Kong Young Architect Award 2015 and DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award 2018, among other recognitions.
